Torfhaus – The Gateway to the Brocken

Situated at an altitude of 812 metres, Torfhaus is Lower Saxony’s highest holiday resort and a popular destination offering spectacular views of the Brocken and the Harz National Park. Originally founded by peat cutters, today hiking trails and wooden walkways wind through the unique raised bogs with their rare flora and fauna.

Torfhaus is an ideal starting point for hiking and mountain biking tours – such as the Goethe Trail leading directly to the Brocken. Well-signposted paths and routes of the ‘Volksbank Arena Harz’ offer a wide range of opportunities for outdoor activities. The National Park Visitor Centre provides fascinating insights into the region’s natural environment.

Winter paradise in the Harz
In winter, around 100 km of cross-country trails, ski slopes, toboggan runs and lifts attract winter sports enthusiasts of all kinds. Local hire shops provide the right equipment.
