The hike is not long, but the slope is steep and consistent throughout the route. It starts from the Albaron Village of Balme, and soon enters a dense beech forest where, a bit hidden and worn down by time (and vandals), there are wooden sculptures from the installation "The Ambush of the Brigands".
During the ascent, you pass some alpine pastures, used for moving the herds to and from the higher ones. Gradually, the environment opens up, and you walk among rhododendron and blueberry shrubs.
You then pass near the "sagna" (a wet area where there was once a lake) of the Alpe Pian Ciavanna with its peculiar vegetation.
Lake Afframont is triangular in shape, bounded by a moraine dam and surrounded by some rocky buttresses. Home to small fish and frogs, the lake is visitable thanks to an easy path that surrounds it. Just before the lake, an alpine pasture hosts cows and goats in summer.
From the road, take the wide path that begins to the left of the large building housing the Albaron di Savoia restaurant. After about a hundred meters, take the path on the left and after crossing a small stream, take the path on the right. After a small clearing, the path enters the woods and begins to climb steadily.
Higher up, ford a stream to the left, pass the Roc Piat alpine pasture, and climb among rhododendrons on the right until you reach the plateau of the Alpe Ciavanna.
With one last steep climb, you first reach an alpine pasture and then, a little further on, the lake.
The return is along the ascent route.

Non-slip sole footwear, wind/rain protection, a warm layer, a supply of water and food, first aid kit, hat, and sunglasses are recommended.
There are no refreshment points along the route, so you must bring supplies of water and food.
The useful exits from the Turin ring road are Venaria Reale or Borgaro: then enter provincial road 1 (direttissima) of the Lanzo valleys. In Germagnano, follow signs for Ceres/Balme. Entering the village of Balme, turn left at the first bridge where the "Pian della Mussa" water and beer bottling plant is clearly visible.
The village of Balme is reached by a bus line (no. 188) departing from Ceres. Check the Cavourese website for schedules and costs.
In front of the "Pian della Mussa" water and beer bottling plant, there is a large parking area. A few spots are also available along the road that crosses the Albaron Village.
