Neckargemünd – A Cycling and Hiking Paradise on the Neckar

Just outside Heidelberg, at the confluence of the Elsenz and the Neckar, lies the picturesque town of Neckargemünd—an ideal starting point for cycling and hiking tours along the banks of the Neckar or in the hills of the Odenwald.

The four-star-rated Neckar Valley Cycle Path (Neckartalradweg) passes numerous medieval castles and traditional inns from Neckargemünd onwards and is also perfectly suited for family outings. It invites visitors to enjoy outdoor activity just like the Neckarsteig hiking trail.

This certified long-distance hiking trail, voted Germany’s most beautiful hiking trail in 2018, stretches 128 kilometers from Heidelberg to Bad Wimpfen. On its first stage www.neckarsteig.de, it leads hikers over the Königstuhl to the former “Free Imperial City” of Neckargemünd, whose more than 1,000-year history can be explored on a walk through its medieval alleys. continues from Neckargemünd via the 800-year-old ruins of Dilsberg Castle, which towers high above the Neckar and offers impressive views over the Neckar Valley. Visitors can explore the medieval town center and the historic castle complex, as well as the underground well tunnel (open May to September), which extends 80 meters deep into the mountain.

Thanks to its excellent accessibility by suburban train (S-Bahn), bus, or the boats of the White Fleet, Neckargemünd is an attractive destination for day trips or weekend getaways.
