In Leutenberg, south of the Hohenwarte reservoir, is the official start and finish point of the promising Slate Mountain Trophy!
On two loops, you explore the Thuringian Slate Mountains / Upper Saale Nature Park, enjoy Thuringian hospitality, and experience Germany's most spectacular low mountain range landscape within the Rennsteig activity region.
The well-signposted route leads you over varied terrain to places that are diverse in landscape and cultural history. Wide views over the fjord-like landscape of the Hohenwarte reservoir, part of the Thuringian Sea – Europe's largest contiguous reservoir area. Narrow trails – uphill and downhill – alternate with special features like the Kolonnenweg on the former inner-German border. Additionally, the path goes over the legendary Rennsteig and through local attractions like the Slate Park Lehesten.
At 10 stamp stations you confirm your ride. If you complete both routes within 36 hours, we reward you with a special trophy, a handcrafted eye-catcher made from slate and Leutenberg knoll limestone.

Besides the basic mountain biking equipment, you should also carry some technical gear. It is an outdoor experience where there is no bike workshop available.

Out of consideration for wildlife and your health, the Slate Mountain Trophy should only be ridden during daylight and from April to October.
Observe the entries on the website www.schiefergebirgstrophy.de or in the Thuringian Forest tour portal, as we announce route closures there, e.g. due to logging or storm warnings. Additionally, you can also use the NINA app for danger warnings.
The technical riding demand ranges mostly from S0 to S1 with a few S2 passages.
You can reach us by car via the BAB 9, Lobenstein exit, or via federal roads 85/90.
Accessible by bus & train
Leutenberg has a train connection; the official start and finish point is about 200 m next to the station. To the official start and finish point Leutenberg with the Erfurt train (Sormitztalbahn, KBS 557) Saalfeld–Blankenstein and back.
The travel time from Saalfeld / Saale is 17 minutes. The bus stop is also directly at the station.
Free parking spaces are available directly at the start and finish point.

The Slate Mountain Trophy runs through a nature park on hiking trails, forest and asphalt roads. You move at your own risk. Respect nature and be considerate of people and animals. Avoid night rides. Do not leave any litter and leave rest areas as you would like to find them.

Start & end of the route:
The start and finish point of both routes is in close proximity to the station in Leutenberg. Between the station and the public hiking parking lot, a 3-meter-high trophy replica with an information board is installed. All important information is available there. An optimal condition for your start and finish photo.
