The circular hiking trail "Stettener Panoramaweg" at Hegaublick above the exemplary restored and worth seeing little town of Engen, presents a Hegau panorama in various constellations. In good visibility, the impressive volcanic landscape in front of Lake Constance with alpine backdrop rises. The volcanic cones Hohenstoffeln, Hohenhewen, Mägdeberg, Hohenkrähen and Hohentwiel can be seen here, lined up like a string of pearls.
On the hike, one encounters the Neuhewen castle ruins, popularly also called "Stettener Schlössle". The castle was built in the 13th century. It was destroyed during the Thirty Years' War. Since the 18th century, the castle ruins have belonged to the Fürstenberg family. In the 19th century, the ruins were quarried for building material. The ruins are at risk of collapse and cannot and must not be entered.
From the hiking portal at the guesthouse „Hegaustern“, you head directly through the forest in a short time to the highest peak of the Hegau volcanoes, the „Neuhewen“, with its 867 meters. The elevation difference to be overcome from the hiking portal to the summit is just under 100 meters. On the summit of Neuhewen stands Neuhewen Castle, also popularly called "Stettener Schlössle". This highest castle complex of the Hegau is not developed for tourism and may not be entered for safety reasons. The castle was built in the mid-13th century by the lords of Hewen and was destroyed in the Thirty Years' War in 1639.
On the way, a barbecue area with a playground invites you to linger before continuing the hike on the Stettener Panoramaweg. The circular route leads around the Engen district of Stetten, which is popularly also called the "village in the sky" because of its extreme hillside location.
The path leads sometimes over gravel, meadow paths, and springy soft forest floor, sometimes uphill and sometimes downhill, and shortly before the destination over a short but steep ascent back to Hegaublick at the restaurant and hotel „Hegaustern“. Throughout the entire route, the magnificent view into the Hegau with its volcanoes extending far into the Alps can be enjoyed.
