Among the 21 departments and institutions of the Joanneum Universal Museum, founded as the Joanneum in 1811, the Armoury is in a class of its own. Attracting around 55,000 visitors annually, it is the Joanneum’s most-visited institution without an exhibitions role. Moreover, as the largest historic armoury in the world, it is a living memorial to a chequered, conflict-ridden past, whose bogeymen and prejudices are still with us.

Today, it confronts us with the question of how to do justice to the subject of war in museums at all. How can we deal ethically with a remarkable collection of weapons in a highly atmospheric place? How can we make it clear that history is always a construct tied to people and time, and often guided by interests? How can we contribute to the creation of a historical knowledge of orientation, how can we open up a distant time that largely breaks with what we are familiar with in terms of politics and society, living conditions or war techniques? How can we use the historical event to develop insights that are relevant for people today? What answers to these questions are possible when we remember that a not insignificant part of our audience are children?
